CPAP
Continuous
positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines are used in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when the
upper airway becomes narrow as the muscles relax during sleep. This reduces oxygen in the blood and causes arousal from sleep.
The CPAP machine stops this phenomenon by delivering a stream of compressed air through the airway. As a result, the airway
is kept open. Many patients report improvement in their quality of sleep and quality of life due to CPAP treatment. Often,
the patient's sleep partner also experiences improved sleep since the loud snoring associated with sleep apnea is decreased
by this treatment.
The American Sleep Apnea Association offers support groups to individuals
affected by sleep apnea. See our A.W.A.K.E. page for more information.
Home Sleep Screening
For patients likely to have sleep apnea, Valley Sleep Center offers convenient and easy-to-use home screening tests.
Take the Stardust II monitor home overnight and bring it back to the lab. We process the results and send it back to your
doctor who will determine follow up treatment. For more information, click here.
Oral Appliances
For patients unable to use CPAP machines, oral appliances are also available. Click here for more information.
Biofeedback
Biofeedback
has been used successfully to combat insomnia without medications. Using this treatment, the patient can learn to better regulate
the sleep-wake cycle.
Support and Education
We offer
support and education to patients in understanding and treating their sleep disorder. Valley Sleep Center sponsors an A.W.A.K.E.
support group to individuals who suffer from sleep apnea. For more information, click here.
