Polysomnography (PSG) involves overnight recording which monitors brain activity, heart rate, eye movement,
respiratory effort and air flow, snoring and oxygen saturation, as well as body position and leg movement. It is used to detect
and characterize sleep apnea in the evaluation of excessive daytime sleepiness. Polysomnography also is used
to study parasomnias, narcolepsy, and disorders of initiation and maintenence of sleep. If significant sleep apnea is detected,
a trial of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is initiated in order to keep the airway open and allow the patient
to achieve deeper stages of sleep. Overnight recording
is done in our sleep lab, which features quiet, comfortable rooms, each with its own television set.
