What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, also called neurotherapy, neurobiofeedback or EEG biofeedback is a therapeutic technique that presents the client with realtime feedback on brainwave activity typically in the form of a video display and sound.

The brain's electrical activity is measured by electrodes placed on the scalp. The aim is to enable control of brainwave activity. If brain activity changes in the direction desired by the therapist, a positive "reward" feedback is given to the individual, and if it regresses, either a negative feedback or no feedback is given. Rewards can be as simple as a change in pitch of a tone or as complex as a certain type of movement of a character in a video game.

Resources on Neurofeedback:

The International Society for Neurofeedback & Research (ISNR) is a membership organization comprised of people from many countries and various professional disciplines doing neurotherapy, neurofeedback training and research. ISNR supports education and excellence in the field of neurofeedback training and neurotherapy and seeks the validation and acceptance of this discipline by a broad spectrum of society.

Comprehensive Neurofeedback Bibliography from ISNR

There have been hundreds of papers in the scientific literature on this topic and the Comprehensive Neurofeedback Bibliography lists them in topical groups. Many of the studies have links to read the abstract or full text online at no charge.

Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback

AAPB's mission is to advance the development, dissemination and utilization of knowledge about applied psychophysiology and biofeedback to improve health and the quality of life through research, education and practice.

Biofeedback Society of California

The Biofeedback Society of California is a multi-professional association of clinicians, researchers and educators who share an interest in the use of biofeedback techniques in pursuing health and human potential. The society is concerned with competency and the quest for knowledge regarding treatment procedures which maximize physiological self-regulation.
